Maranatha news email for February 4

Hello, Maranatha friends –

Linda Larsen will continue her two-week lesson series, “Be Careful What You Promise,” this Sunday. She gave us an interesting story from Acts 5:1-11 to consider last Sunday. You can find her lesson later this week at http://www.bostonavenue.org/maranatha.html .

Joel Panciera will teach us during the six weeks of Lent, beginning February 18. On those six Sundays, we will begin class with his lesson promptly at 9:45, then conduct class business afterward so that he can leave to rehearse the choir.

WELCOME to Amber, our new Exodus House Apartment M resident. It was nice having her in class Sunday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Art Campbell, Sherry Stinson and Karey Low! CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah and Cisco Maldonado, who are celebrating an anniversary this week.

THANKS to the Maldonados and Goodwins for hosting, and to Jimmy Berg for his prayer last Sunday. Ed and Judith Payton and Karen and Bill Tankersley will be our hosts this week, then Susan Hamilton will lead us in prayer.

JOYS AND CONCERNS:

Our prayers go out to David Cooley and his family after the death of his father last week.

John Sherman has been experiencing some falls and elevated blood sugar levels. Thankfully, his levels had improved some on Monday.

Paul Staat is having a lot of neuropathy pain from previous chemo treatments. He is at M.D. Anderson for a checkup this week, and hopes the doctors there can give him some relief.

Clarkie Williams’ older brother Freddie has been hospitalized for health problems.

Sharon Earley’s dad is having knee replacement surgery this Thursday.

Bill Schillinger has experienced some complications from surgery. He is still hospitalized.

Best wishes to Nancy Christy on her marriage.

Congratulations to Susie Butterworth on her retirement!

CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you signed up to help serve dinner at the Day Center for the Homeless, please plan to be at the church at 4:30 this Friday to transport the food. You should be finished by 6:30. Contact the Wansleys for more information.

Two auction items are coming up: The J.P.’s Royal Tea, hosted by Janet Purinton and Judith Payton, will take place this Saturday for those who purchased it. The gourmet dinner hosted by the Butterworths and Todds is scheduled for February 17.

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Discover B.A. on March 4 will resemble a job fair, with informative displays about the various ministries, groups, and Sunday School classes in our church. All are invited to a come-and-go work party on Wednesday, February 21, between 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. to help create our class’s display.

Dr. Kevin Tully, a former associate minister at B.A., will be the speaker at Senior Seekers next Thursday, Feb. 15. His Lenten devotional book, Trash Talking to God, will also be available. More info can be found in The Word.

This year’s Barton Clinton Gordey series will feature Dr. Maria Dixon-Hall, Senior Advisor to the Provost for Campus Cultural Intelligence Initiatives at Southern Methodist University. She will lead a Race Relations Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 17; will preach at both services on Sunday morning, Feb. 18; then will lecture on Sunday and Monday evenings, Feb. 18 and 19, at 7:00 p.m. There are some great TED videos on YouTube, if you’d like to check her out before she comes.

This month is Lights On for Cookson, and there are several discipleship classes going on during Lent, if you’d like to participate. Look for more information in The Word.

Hope you’re having a good week! We’ll see you Sunday –
