Love Offering Basket this Sunday

The love offering basket will be out on Sunday, and the purpose of the offering requires some explanation. If you are so inclined, please place your gift in the basket.

Clarkie Williams’ brother Freddie is having a benefit for his Alzheimer’s treatment in Pine Bluff AR on May 19. She is hopeful of attending the event with her son but is not financially capable of making the trip. Clarkie wrote a letter to Rev. Wiggs regarding the event, and he appropriately forwarded it to Roger and me.

We won’t make any comments about this in class Sunday but will have the basket near the coffee pot. Comments would be awkward if Clarkie is present.

See you Sunday! Invite a friend!

Maranatha newsletter for April 8

Greetings, Maranatha friends!

We had another great morning last Sunday as Dr. Sarah Morice Brubaker, Associate Professor of Theology (as of July 1f) at Phillips Theological Seminary shared an intriguing and very timely lesson, “What Big Data Has to Do with the Church and How the Church Might Respond To It.” She shared the history of untruthfulness in theology, then talked about “persuasion architecture” and how businesses and special interests are using big data to manipulate people today. She will continue her lesson this Sunday morning, and if you missed Part I last Sunday, you can find it at http://www.bostonavenue.org/uploads/media/audio/180408maranatha.mp3.

Kendall Carpenter presented the Finance Committee’s recommendation for giving, which was sent out last week. It was approved, with some funds still available for later in the year. She also asked for class approval to include fundraisers from other programs that class members are involved in. No one brought up objections with such short notice, so we will try that and see how it goes.

Ed Payton asked for volunteers to help take and serve food in Jones, Oklahoma, to teachers who are walking to Oklahoma City.

Welcome to our visitor, Melanie Evans’ sister, Judy Bell.

Remember LouAnn, who recently lost her fiancé to cancer.

Please keep all of these in your prayers

Guidelines for Maranatha’s support of benevolences

Prior to class this week, you may wish to read the guidelines which were created in the class in 2003 related to finance committee benevolence consideration. These were used by the Finance Committee in preparing the presented proposals we will vote about this coming Sunday. That statement of purpose is attached. Being absent for a number of years while Melanie and I were exiled in Florida, I did not know this statement of purpose existed.

If you have any suggested refinements to the statement of purpose, please drop a note to Kendall Carpenter and she will discuss with the committee and potentially bring a proposal to the class for a vote sometime in the future.

See you Sunday!
