Maranatha News

Hey, friends:

We have three important things to discuss this week, so hang on for the ride.

First, class officers. Five wonderful people have stepped up to fill positions this week and we are so grateful! Dee Dueck took the position of Attendance Secretary, Shari Goodwin agreed to put out the Maranatha Newsletter each week (provided someone will fill in for her during the weeks that she is getting treatment in Ft. Worth) and Debra Morgan, Allene Donley and Sharon Earley all agreed to serve on the Caranatha Team. Since our goal is to get five people on the Caranatha Team to ensure that no one is ever overwhelmed by multiple needs regardless of the issues surrounding the class members at any one time, this means that we just need two more people to work with Debra, Allene & Sharon to fill out the Caranatha Team. So here are the positions remaining open:

President(s) – but now without the responsibility of the dreaded newsletter!

Auction Chaironly two months per year. It’s like working for the government!

Caranatha Team – two more people to work with the three great people who have already agreed to serve!

That’s it. All the other positions are filled for us to move into 2017. You can do this. Trust me, it isn’t rocket science. If Jim and I can do it, anyone can.

Secondly, the upcoming Auction. Ed & Judith Payton are working extremely hard to make this a great event that everyone can enjoy AND one which will generate lots of funds so we can support many worthwhile causes at the church and in Tulsa. Please be thinking about what you can donate, either large or small, and get those auction item forms turned into Ed. The auction falls immediately after Thanksgiving this year, so we have to plan BEFORE Thanksgiving and be ready. Ed has provided lots of helpful information in the Social Event section of the newsletter so be sure to check it out.

Finally, it is time to begin planning in earnest for that crazy idea that we approved in February to host an All Church Brunch on Christmas morning for the entire church. As you recall Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, and everything is being done a little differently. There is no early service and no Sunday School. Instead, the only two events that morning are our Brunch from 9:00 to 10;30 and then one worship service at 11:00. Jim Embrey, Glenna Arnott, Rex & Allene Donley and I have begun planning in earnest and there will be lots of ways for you to get involved even if your family plans prevent you from working on the 25th. We will need the help of the whole class to make this happen. The first thing to happen is that we are going to begin selling tickets each Sunday in December, the same way that we do for Chili Supper. We will sell on December 4, 11, 18 and at all the services on the 24th. Jim Embrey will have a signup sheet to pass around this Sunday to start signing up for slots to sell tickets BEFORE Sunday School (9:30 to 9:50), AFTER Sunday School (10;30 to 11:00) and AFTER worship (11:55 to 12:20). We will also need NORTH and SOUTH ticket sellers for all of the services on the 24th. Please sign up to sell if you possibly can. We are not selling tickets as a fundraiser, but to use as a headcount for food planning purposes, so keeping an accurate count of the number of tickets that we sell is absolutely critical. Remember that any money that we accidentally make is going immediately to the BAUMC Mission Endowment Fund. This can be a fun opportunity for fellowship with each other as we attempt something that no other class has ever done at BAUMC. Frankly, if I am going to do the impossible or the improbable, I want to do it with the incredible people of Maranatha.

Remember that you are appreciated, enjoyed and admired by your class members.

Maranatha Newsletter

Hey, Maranatha friends:

It is time to attack this issue of class officers. Despite weekly pleading, cajoling and beseeching from the podium (and Jim actually threatening to sing endless verses of “Just As I Am” until someone respond to the class officer altar call – perish the thought!), we still have five positions to fill. Let’s discuss each one (or rather, I’ll discuss each one and you pick up your phone to text me that you will happily accept that position!). They are:

President(s) – Easiest job on the planet. Truly a cakewalk. You just have to (1) be in class most of the time; (2) be willing to wrangle the class from the podium; (3) handle details regarding class members as they arise during the week; and (4) update the board each week from information that various chair people give you. Not tough duty.

The only time consuming part is the newsletter and I actually have a thought about that. What if we designated a new position as Maranatha Newsletter Editor so that the President(s) just assisted in getting info to the Newsletter Editor and then the Editor could happily spend his/her time creating as short or as long a newsletter as the editor wanted. Jim Embrey and I kind of grew it into epic proportions during the past two years, but the reality is that people really just need information. It could even just be a chatty email with all the details. Aren’t there any former journalism majors out there that would take the Newsletter Editor position?

Look, I know that you have enjoyed perusing Jim’s wild socks collection each week, but it is time to let him sit down and start scoping out someone else’s socks or gorgeous heels! Sign up to be President!

Auction ChairWorks hard for about two months a year and provides a great benefit to the class and to many deserving organizations by virtue of the money raised. Don’t you want to be the person who does that just by working hard for two months?

Caranatha – Absolutely pivotal to the class, as this person/group ensures that we continue to surround our Maranatha family with loving support at the time that they most need it. Probably would be best to have multiple people doing this task since there are weeks when we have multiple Maranatha members with different needs. Could you and a couple of friends get together and serve in this way? It would be a very meaningful experience.

Reporter – To fulfill this role, you complete a form that goes to the Communications Director so Hayley knows what to publish about Maranatha’s activities each week. Nothing difficult or complex. Much of the information for the form is contained on the board so you copy it down and, voila! You are an effective reporter!

Attendance Secretary There is no better way for a new person, a shy person, or a person who struggles with names to get to know the class members than to serve as attendance secretary. You also sit at the back table during the early part of class, so you are closest to the coffee! This is not a complex job, but is one that gives you a chance to interact with everyone if you want to do so.

That’s it. Everything else is filled and we are grateful to those people who have stepped up to serve in some capacity next year. Won’t you prayerfully consider if you could be part of the Maranatha leadership team?

I’m just going to mope by my phone until you text me . . .

El Sistema first annual report of performance

All,

Our class newsletter will be sent out tomorrow. Until then I am passing on the link to the first annual report concerning El Sistema, courtesy of Roger Rowe.

This is a worthwhile read, I highly encourage you to take the time to read and understand the awesome impact this program is having on our youth and underserved community.

Per Mindy Sharp yesterday she mentioned that the El Sistema program is a perfect example of "practical theology" in practice.

Blessings to all,

Jim & Julee

This week’s newsletter

Hey, Maranatha friends:

Attached you will find the Maranatha newsletter that covers last week and this week, due to a certain computer program that crashed but shall remain nameless. Let’s just say that if you want to reach me, you should definitely use my Hall Estill address, because the Maranatha gmail address and I are no longer friends. Pam Low and Jim Embrey will be sending out the newsletter after I prepare it each week for the remainder of the year. At least, that is the plan if I don’t resort to actually biting the computer . . .

Lots of interesting opportunities this week, including theatrical productions (check the Announcements Section) corporate internships for young people (check the Announcements Section) and, of course, a whopper of a social coming up this Friday. Fifty-six people have signed up to attend so it should be a wonderful evening. Check the Social Section for all the details and prepare to have fun!

Remember that you are appreciated, enjoyed and admired by your class members.

Thanks,

Angie

Maranatha Newsletter

Hey, Maranatha friends:

Once again, I barely make it under the Friday afternoon newsletter deadline, but this has been a busy legal week so please forgive me. A couple of things to note:

We will be drawing this Sunday in class for the two tickets to the special Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Christmas Luncheon to be held on Tuesday, December 6th from 10:30 to 12:30. If you want your name in the hat/bucket/hopper/container from which the winner will be drawn, please notify Maranatha member Margaret Been (the event’s co-chair) prior to class on Sunday. While you don’t have to be present to win, bribing the class presidents is always acceptable. Jim likes chocolate, and I would look quite favorably on anyone who volunteered to write a month’s worth of class newsletters. Just sayin’ . . .

Dr. Joel Panciera will be back this Sunday with his second lesson on the Five Marks of a Methodist. i am loving having so many sweet faces back together with the Living the Questions class members sitting in to enjoy these lessons. It’s like our own family reunion during September!

Remember that you are appreciated, enjoyed and admired by your class members!
