Update on Paul Staat

When my daughter, Lisa and I took dinner to Paul and Mary’s house on Saturday, Paul met us on the porch and called us “little elves.” He told us how much they appreciate everything that the class has done for them and asked me to let everyone know. I was really surprised when he actually came outside onto the porch and gave us each a little side hug. He also said that he would be going back to St. John’s today for more chemo.

Then when I saw Mary at church she said that Paul’s blood count is so good that he’s not too worried about the germ scare. She said that he will be at St. John’s for five days this week.

Lotsa Helping Hands Community

As we shared with you last week, the Maranatha Lotsa Helping Hands Community will be coordinating meals for Paul and Mary for the next 4 to 6 months.  We wanted to let you know that we have opened our “Community” to other BAUMC classes and groups, as well as Mary’s Broken Arrow School co-workers to assist with providing meals.  This will help Mary and Paul to direct everyone who wants to help to this one tool for scheduling and instructions.

Although any of these participants may access Lotsa Helping Hands by way of this Maranatha Class website, we wanted to assure you that only our Maranatha class members will have access to the secured information on our class site.

If you haven’t signed up to become a member of our “LHH Community,” use the LHH Instructions  and get started.

We started with 52 dinners to schedule and still have 48 available for the taking!

Lotsa Helping Hands Site

This is a follow-up to Karen Campbell’s email of last night. Here are the instructions for getting into the Lotsa Helping Hands CARE-anatha site:

If you have not already done so, you will need to sign up to become a member of the CARE-anatha Lotsa Helping Hands community by following this link:

Your first name, last name, telephone number and email address will be required. After you have signed up, and after you have been verified by Karen or Barbara, you will be sent an email to verify your email address. Follow that email’s link back to the site, and use the email’s instructions for setting your password.

After you have successfully logged in, go to the “Me” page for your email opt-out settings, and visit the Calendar to see whether you can help the class by signing up for any “activities.” If you are already a member of the Lotsa Helping Hands site, then use the same link above and login.

If you can’t remember your password, follow the instructions on that web page (as I had to do today).

You may also find these instructions on this site, by clicking the link on the  right to the CARE-anatha page.

Karen has set up several weeks of slots (called “activities”) for those who would like to volunteer to take dinner to the Staats on the CARE-anatha Lotsa Helping Hands calendar, beginning with the first week in May. Once you sign up, you will be sent a confirmation email, and then reminder emails one month, one week, and one day before your scheduled date. It’s really very slick.

Food for Staat Family

Dear Maranatha,

Mary, Paul and Kate Staat have a lot on their plates right now.  However, beginning next Monday they will have long, tiring days of in and out of hospitals and treatments.  We would like to be sure that food on their plates isn’t something they have to think about.

If you would be able to provide a meal for them next week, please email me at k.brownlee(at)sbcglobal.net.  It will just be Mary & Kate and they like EVERYTHING!!!!!  We will have an ice chest sitting out for you on the Staats’ porch to put your food into sometime between 4 and 5:30 pm (4917 S. Madison).  That way nobody is on a tight schedule.  I just want to be sure we are covered for next week. I will confirm next week’s schedule with people by email.

After next week, we will be using the Lotsa Helping Hands website to calendar food assignments.  We will send out a reminder about how to sign up and use the site.

Also, Kate has her driver’s license, so we don’t need to help with driving.  However, should Mary need to stay over night at the hospital, she would want someone to stay with Kate or she may ask for someone to stay with Paul if she needs to be away and doesn’t feel comfortable leaving him alone.  If you are able to help with overnights with Kate or spelling Mary at the hospital, please email me, giving me an idea of your schedule at k.brownlee(at)sbcglobal.net.

Update on Paul Staat

William, Karen, Barbara and Shari,

Below is an excerpt from a message from Paul Staat who is reporting
after the visit with his physician.  He has also communicated with
Teri Brannin (Missions Committee) and others regarding his situation,
and I believe that Maranatha’s response ought to be coordinated with
Teri and others who wish to help Paul and Mary.  Unless I hear
differently from you, I will assume that Karen will take the lead on
making recommendations for Maranatha members.  Whether you wish to
send the excerpt below to our class members is a decision that I leave
to you.  I look forward to hearing from you how I can be a part of
Maranatha’s support for Paul.

This procedure is serious stuff, but the track record for remission
after this procedure is excellent and the over all survival rate is
good.

Start April 24; St Johns. In hospital one week. Home one week. Maybe
light office work two weeks. Then in hospital one week. Home one week.
May be back to work two weeks.  Transfer to St. Francis transplant
unit. One week in hospital, one week home, then back in for final
heavy chemo, radiation, transplant and recovery. Approx 21 to 30 days
during that process from the time I enter St. Francis for the final
chemo. There goes the summer! This schedule may undergo some
adjustments as we look at my bodies response after each step of the
process.

I will be able to have visitors if they do not have coughs or open
sores or wounds. Still have to do the work on the house, but
afterwards will be able to have visitors. No quite as dire as thought
earlier.

We will take things as they come. I will try to stay as connected as I
can by laptop.

E-mail from Paul Staat

My family and I are speechless with gratitude for the loving
kindnesses and generosity all of you have expressed.  I am humbled
with wonder as to why I should demand such attention. There are so
many others in Maranatha, Roundtable, and other classes who have had
similar medical issues as I have presently. You all always find
profound ways to lift up, to energize, to affirm. Mary, Kate and I
thank you from the bottom of our heart.

I will receive the whole picture of what will be happening on Monday.
My oncologist Dr. Stephan Lynch. Good doctor I understand. Lots of
experience. Know that I have every confidence in a good outcome. With
an ever present, gracious, loving God, amazing family, and a faith
community of friends second to none, how much better could it get.
I’ll keep you in the loop via Mary or email.

By the way, one little correction, Mary and Kate will probably wear
masks and gloves at the hospital, not sure yet about home. That’s to
find out Monday.

Paul and Mary Staat

 Maranatha Classmates,

Class representatives have been talking with Paul Staat regarding the challenges that he and Mary will be facing once he starts his stem cell treatment program.  Paul has an appointment with his physician this next Monday, and expects that he will get more specific instructions on the process and needs at that time.  

It is likely, however, that Paul and Mary’s house will need some substantial re-fitting in order to create a sterile environment for him once his immune system is depleted in preparation for the treatment.  Therefore, when Paul and Mary have an idea of house needs, we will get that information to the class and see if anyone has special talents or connections that may be of help on this project.

In the meantime, Maranatha has proven time and time again that we can take care of a yard in need.  Here is another opportunity—-This Saturday, April 16, 8:30-11 AM meet at Paul and Mary’s house (4917 S Madison Ave) with work gloves and rakes.  Shari & Lynn Goodwin will be coordinating this project.  We realize it is also Burrough’s Clean Up Day, but if we divide, we can conquer both projects!

In addition, Maranatha Alums, Rick & Melanie Evans have reached out from Florida to help with the ongoing yard needs.  Their son, Michael, owns and operates a lawn service here in Tulsa.  After we get the yard cleaned up on Saturday, Michael will be servicing the Staat’s yard, courtesy of Rick & Melanie!

Update on Meredith Wansley

To our Maranatha friends:

Meredith had successful surgery earlier today, and we expect for her to be home on Saturday. She will recovering at home for about a week, yet she’s already checking work messages on her IPhone.

We appreciate the prayers and your expressions of concern. Thanks for offers of food, etc, but we’re OK for now. It nice to know you’re there if and when we need you.

Update on Meredith Wansley

The complication delaying gall bladder surgery for Meredith has finally been resolved after two uncomfortable attempts at the procedure. She will likely have surgery now, probably tomorrow, Friday. She’s still pretty sedated most of the time. We appreciate your prayers; thank you.
